There is one über, savory soup that will satisfy dining reviewers across America: It starts with a stone (yes, basically a big rock), then a hearty carrot, a juicy red tomato, and on and on. But the key ingredient is that stone—and your imagination. By now, you might recognize the recipe—for Stone Soup—a children’s fable about two soldiers who walk into a town during World War II. Hungry, they wander through the town, going from door to door, pleading for scraps of food to hold off their hunger. But the villagers exclaim, “We’re starving here! Go away!” And so the soldiers pull an “Emperor’s New Clothes” type of scenario on the selfish locals: They find a pot and a stone and start spreading the news that they’ve concocted an amazing soup (of course it’s all make believe). The only glitch, they tell the curious people, is that the soup would be better if it had a carrot or a tomato thrown into the broth. And so from there, one by one, contributions are made to the pot of soup, and everyone exclaims, “This is the best soup I ever had.” While it’s a great tale, fundamentally, its bottom-line message is about the idea of cooperation to achieve success.

Eight Tens @ 8 - 2008

'Eight Tens' again provides zippy entertainment for everyone.
